What is Modern Quilting? Panel Discussion

Do you struggle before every STLMQG meeting, trying to decide if the item you want to bring
to Show & Tell can be classified as modern quilting?

Are you puzzled when members throw around names like Anna Maria Horner, Tula Pink,

Do you leave the STLMQG meetings excited; but feel like you are missing out on something?

Do you have tons of questions about modern quilting?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then do we have an event for you.
What is Modern Quilting? Panel Discussion

I am happy to tell you that our panelist have been chosen and are
all super-excited to be a part of this event.

Laura
Juli Ann

Here are some of the questions that we will be asking our panelists:
  • What is your definition of Modern Quilting?
  • What do you like about this style and what does it mean to your creativity?
  • How were you introduced to this style?
  • Where to you find inspiration?
  • What are some of your favorite fabric Designers/Collections?
  • What is your definition of Traditional Quilting?
  • What are the differences you see between a Traditional and Modern block/quilt/fabric?
Please make sure that if you have a question about modern quilting you attend February's meeting, so you get the answers you need.  Our panelists will also be bringing examples of quilts, quilted items and fabrics with them to help better illustrate this style.

STLMQG Meeting

Meeting Recap (January 8th, 2011)

Ol’ Jack Frost tried to keep the Modern Quilters away with his frigid weather, yet we packed the house.

-We now have 45 due paying members, we are so AWESOME!!! Just take a look and see for yourself.

Now on to Guild News:
-The STLMQG now has a checking account; which will make it easier to receive dues in the future.
-All future roster editions will be emailed to the due-paying members as needed.

-Our next STLMQG Member Spotlight shines on Cindy Lammon. You can read all about her here…or just scroll down 2 posts. Remember, if you would like to have the spotlight shine on you, please contact Mary Claire, who will get you on the list.

-If you haven’t already checked it out, the next Project Modern Challenge was posted this Wednesday. You can read all about it on the Modern Quilt Guild’s site. Mary Claire was one of the winners from Project Modern Challenge: 1…you could be a winner in Round 2.

-Jamie Mueller gave us an excellent presentation entitled “Modern Quilting in the Online World”. You can see the PowerPoint here and if you need a copy of the handout, it’s here. I really would encourage you to use Jamie’s presentation to become more familiar with Flickr. We are not kidding when we say that it is an entire world of inspiration…that literally is just a click away. Thanks Again Jamie!!!

-Show & Tell is always alot of fun. Below are some links which you might enjoy.
We still have some exciting news coming up. Just think of this as intermission.  Go get some coffee or maybe a glass of wine and let's settle in for Part 2.

-First up is a Pincushion Swap. All members who would like to participate need to make a modern-type pincushion and bring it to the February meeting at Oakbend Library. You’ll then show off your “pinnie” and we’ll play a game to determine who takes home which one. If you are new to pincushions, would like to try something different or want to see the crazy and imaginative things people do, please check out the PinCushion Swap 2011 post that Mary Claire wrote. It will link you to tons of pics, tutorials, etc.

-Next on our list is the Solids Only Challenge that we teased way back in December. Today we revealed the rules and surprised all due-paying members with a Charm Pack, graciously provided by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. You can find a link to the instructions, faq, etc on the Challenge tab at the top of every page and I’ve created a discussion thread on Flickr too. Even if you have the directions, I would suggest you check out the page ever so often as we’ll post related news there.
*If you are a due-paying member and weren’t at the January meeting, you can pick up your charm pack at February’s meeting if you choose to play.

-In February, we’ll host a panel discussion asking What is Modern Quilting? If you would like to be one of the panelists, you must have a clear understanding of the topic and be able to bring with you fabric, quilts, etc which can help explain this style to our membership. Please contact me if you are interested as I’ll be selecting the panelists next Friday.

-We also are looking for volunteers.  Could that be you?  Do you have a quilting method, skill, shortcut, block piecing, machine-quilting, skill that you'd like to demonstrate? Send me a message, as we'll be hosting a Demo Day in March and several Demo sessions throughout the year.

Thanks Everyone!!!

Pin Cushion Swap 2011

1. Scrappy Pincushion #2, 2. Mini Hexagon Pincushion Practice, 3. 29th July, 2010, 4. Skinny Pincushion Free Pattern, 5. Scrappy Pincushion Swap, 6. sew pin cushion
We hope everyone is excited about the pin cushion swap in February!
Are you ready to get started?
Need an idea or some inspiration?
We are here to help!

This Flickr group has, count um, 35 pages of pin cushion pictures!
This Flickr thread has links to 32 tutorials!

Not enough?

How about this cute pattern from fabric designer Heather Bailey?

Got a copy of Sewing Bit's and Pieces by Sandi Henderson?
There's a pin cushion pattern in there!
Got a copy of Sew it Seams by Anna Maria Horner?
There's a pin cushion pattern in there too!

So grab that new modern fabric you just bought and get to it!

In case you missed it, each participant will bring their unwrapped pin cushion to the February meeting for a show and tell.  We'll put all the pin cushions on a table and assign numbers to each participant randomly.  Number 1 goes first and chooses a pin cushion.
Number 2 goes next and can choose a pin cushion off the table OR she/he can steal a previously chosen pin cushion.
Note that once a pin cushion has touched three sets of hands, it is considered in-active and can no longer be stolen.
We will continue this way until all the pin cushions have a new home!

Feel free to comment with more pin cushion ideas or questions!

Member Spotlight #2

Name: Cindy Lammon
Flickr Name: clammon
Blog:
www.hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.com
Area of Town: O'Fallon, MO
Misc: I've been married for 34 years and have 2 grown children, a son who's a lawyer in Chicago (single) and a daughter who's married to a Marine with 2 daughters, ages 1 and 3.

What brought you to the STLMQG?

---I love modern fabrics and actually purchased some Joel Dewberry, Erin McMorris, and Amy Butler years ago, but had no idea what to do with them. When I found Modern Quilting popping up on the internet, I loved how they were using these fabrics and loved the simple graphic designs. Guilds are great because the ideas and inspiration you get is wonderful!

Do you participate in other guilds or bees?
---I am the founder of a small guild in O'Fallon called Bound Together Quilt Guild. I've been the leader of it since we started 4-5 years ago. We're small and simple, but have lots of fun.

When did you start quilting?
---I attempted my first quilt when I was in high school. My Mom had a quilting magazine and I cut out a Double Wedding Ring quilt using tissue paper templates. Never worked out (I wonder why??). I took my first class 30 years ago when my daughter was a year old and I was working only part time. I made 3 quilts from that original pattern before I ventured into some thing new!

Why do you quilt?
---Hard to answer - I'm not really sure. I think quilts are really beautiful works of art. I love fabric, love putting the fabrics together, enjoy the design process and the math involved. Quilting is also very relaxing for me and now that I'm an empty nester - I happy that I have such a fun hobby to fill my days.

What was your most recent fabric purchase?
---Amy Butler's Soul Blossoms and a box of 100 Kona Solid FQs. (A nice birthday gift).

What is on your "I want to make this" List?
---I'd like to make a quilt from Cherri House's book "City Quilts". My son lives in a very modern high rise in downtown Chicago - I think one of those would be perfect.

What is something you struggle with?
---Paper piecing - just can't get that. I also struggle with getting things finished. I'm great at starting a quilt, but once I see what it's going to look like, I have to push myself to finish. I'm ready at that point to use the newest fabric and start the next project!

What do you do when you aren't quilting?
---Honestly - I'm quilting a lot. I also love to garden, cook, decorate, and read. I hang out with my grand daughters every chance I get (and that involves frequent traveling).

Anything else you want to say?
---Random things:
1. Quilting things I'm proud of: 3 books published by Martingale & Co; quilts in several magazine publications; many beginning students that are now accomplished quilters.
2. I watch way too much HGTV. I could redecorate my house every month.
3. I'm challenged by photography and hope to become much better.
4. I love word puzzles.
5. Almost all of my friends are quilters - they're the best!!!
