Meeting Recap (March 12th, 2016)

Thank you to everyone who attended March's guild meeting, you certainly helped make it an exciting one.  Read on to see what you may have missed and or need to check out.

  • Casey collected everyone's blocks for the I-70 swap and it sounds like we have the perfect number of participants.  If you took a photo of your block; but haven't uploaded it yet to Instagram, be sure to use the hashtags #i70swap and #stlmqg
  • Thank you to Dottie, Casey, Becca and Silvia for giving us a recap of their experiences at QuiltCon 2016; which was held in Pasadena a few weeks ago.  One of them mentioned the article that was in the L.A. Times; which we have included a link to here if you would like to read it. Interested in attending the next QuiltCon, it will be in Savannah, GA next year.  Visit this link to learn more.
  • Another big thank you to Mary Claire, for presenting this month's trunk show.  If you are unfamiliar with her work, or would like to see more, be sure to follow her on Instagram (@splendorfalls).
  • Finally the day's big event was Quilting Trivia; which made for some entertainment as well as education. It is surprising the random bits of knowledge we all collect and store away for times such as these.
We have uploaded on our guild's Instagram page (@stlmqg) most of the quilts and items shown during this month's Show & Tell, please be sure to check it out.

Here are some upcoming events and or opportunities you might be interested in.

  • Bits & Pieces Quilt Guild is hosting their bi-annual Quilt Show at Queeny Park this coming weekend 3/19 - 3/20.  Admission is $7 and is good for both days.  Please visit their website to learn more...Fanfare of Quilts 2016.
  • Have you heard the call for quilts by the Ontario Museum of History & Art.  They are holding a show 12/1 - 1/22 in Ontario, California and are looking for quilts to be juried into the show. To learn more about this opportunity, please visit the links below.

Jessica, our guild's Secretary will be sending out two emails Sunday evening to all dues-paying members. Please be sure that you read them and respond where needed, as they will help us to gather information for our June Roadtrip to Nashville, and our upcoming Quarterly Sew-In.

See you in April; but keep the conversation going on Facebook and IG.

Meeting #61 - January 9th, 2016

Hello Modern Quilters,

Now that the holidays are over, and you are getting back in the swing of things, we want to welcome you to the start of another great year with the St. Louis MQG.  Let's see those things you have been working on over the break, and let's discuss what you AND we have planned for 2016.

Date: January 9th, 2016
Time: 10am - 12:30pm
Location: The Heights

   =================================================================
Agenda:

-Welcome & Guild Business
   :: Membership Information
   :: Financial Information
   :: Special Announcements/Quilting News

-Committee Sign-Up
   :: Member's Swap/Challenge Committee
   :: Charity Committee

-Member Trunk Show Sign-Ups *See below*
- FIND SOMEONE WHO game
---Break---
-Quilting Resolutions
-2016 Activities
-Show & Tell
-Mix & Mingle

-------------------------- FYI ------------------------------

::  Let's see what fun modern quilty things you received (fabrics, books, notion you've been eyeing) or what items you made during the holiday break.  Please limit this to 3 items per member.  Additionally, in an effort to ensure we have time for everyone, please make sure that you give us the abbreviated 2 min story not a dissertation :-)

:: The Freebie Table  is changing this year. Starting this January, whatever you bring that is left over at the end of the meeting, you must take back with you, or dispose of accordingly (throw it out, donate to Goodwill, etc).  We will no longer be collecting and bringing back the leftover items month to month.  Also, please be respectful of your fellow members and don't bring "junk" to begin with, this is an opportunity to part with things that you no longer love; but think other members might want.

:: We are looking for 9 STLMQG members to participate in a new monthly program called "Member Trunk-Show".  The key is that you MUST actually make modern quilts/projects, since we are after all a modern quilt guild whose motto is "All Modern All The Time".  This program will give 9 members the opportunity to share a little bit more about themselves, show more of their work then is allowed during Show & Tell, as well as what future projects they are working on, etc.  Obviously, if you are a pattern designer or long-arm quilter who also makes quilts yourself, you can mention your business; but this is NOT a sales pitch.  To qualify, you must have been a member of the STLMQG for at least 1 full year and have a clear understanding of what modern quilting is.  Sign-ups will occur during the meeting, don't be shy.

See You Saturday!!!

:: Are you new to our guild and haven't had the pleasure of participating in our annual Fundraiser...check out this link from 2013; which breaks it all down for you.  Want to participate, don't forget cash or your checkbook, and a pen/marker; which makes ticket writing easier on you.  For those who donated items, you'll be given your tickets during the break.

:: Don't forget your modern Show & Tell projects, fabrics, books, etc.  Let's be inspired!

See You Saturday!!!

Meeting Recap (November 14th, 2015)

As always, thanks to everyone who came to our meeting this past Saturday, it was nice to finally catch up with so many of you who we haven't seen for a while.  Now onto the recap...

  • It's not too late to submit a quilt to QuiltCon's juried quilt show, check out the rules and how to enter here [Quilt Show/QuiltCon West].  The due date is Nov. 30th.
  • As we approach the close of 2015, many start planning for 2016, and what better way to write down those plans then in your Quilter's Planner.  Stephanie Palmer is the creator of this tool; which you can learn more about and purchase on her crowd-sourcing campaign page.
  • There is lots of local quilt shop news...both happy and sad, here are the details:
    • MerrilyWeSew is moving into its new home in Fenton and should be open the first week of December.
    • JanieLou has moved into its new home in downtown Kirkwood and is open for business.
    • SewMuchFun is a new shop in Collinsville, Illinois, check out their site for more information.
    • InStitches located in Ballwin is closing it's doors.
  • Are you a Maker, Supplier, Designer or Pro-Blogger; have you heard of the Craft Industry Alliance?  It's a new kind of trade organization which you may want to investigate, as they are out to help you strengthen your business.
  • Quilt National 2015 is in St. Louis for a short time this November. If you are interested in checking out this travelling quilt show which runs Nov 19th-28th check out this link for more info.
  • Looking for inspiration?  You don't have to look far as the St. Louis Art Museum has an exhibit called "St. Louis Modern" which runs now through January 21st.  Check out this link for more info.
  • What did we learn from the Member's Swap/Challenge Committee Tool Swap that Casey led this past meeting?  That everyone loves Wonder Clips and that there is no shortage of interesting notions out there.  Thanks to the committee for putting this fun swap together.
  • A big thank you also goes out to all of the members who donated quilts for our Project Linus charitable collection.  Look at this lovely stack of 65 quilts (photographed by Jessica Schunke).

  • Speaking of Jessica, we are thrilled to announce that she will be joining the Officers next year in the role of Secretary.  YAY!!
  • If you haven't yet paid your 2016 guild dues, it's not too late.  You can pay at the December meeting or if you are a current member you can mail it in (check your inbox for info on how to do that).
  • Finally, thank you to everyone who donated items to our December Fundraiser.  We haven't started sorting them; but we took a peek and there are lots of great items, just you wait.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Meeting Recap (August 8th, 2015)

A big thanks to everyone who came out today, we know that time is precious...and we are thankful you spent it with us.  Let's do a meeting recap, shall we, as there were lots of things discussed.

  • Kelly shared the second of our two "BOM" Block of the Month blocks today, as designed/decided by Carol K.

  • Jessica talked a little about our first charitable project; which was making totes for a local shelter.  Our members came thru as we knew they would, donating a little over 40 bags. If you search the hashtag #stlmqgcares and/or #stlmqg on Instagram, you can see many if not all of the totes which were made and donated. A big round of applause goes out to all of those who helped with this project.

St. Louis MQG // Totes made and donated by our members

  • Our second charity project, collecting quilts for Project Linus is ongoing with a due date of November 14th (our Nov. meeting).  Casey announced that all those who donate a quilt to us in November or have donated a quilt as part of this project to us earlier in the year will be entered into a drawing (1 quilt donation = 1 entry, 2 quilt donations = 2 entries...so on and so forth). Additionally, be sure to enter your quilt into the 100 Quilts for Kids charity drive...which is an online drive encouraging quilters to make a quilt for a child in need.  Please rest easy knowing that you can still entering a quilt into the 100 Quilts for Kids, and yet donate it to our Project Linus collection.

  • Casey also announced our final swap for this year; which will be a Tool Swap.  We all have those tools that we love and reach for time and again, so let's share that passion with someone else.  All those who want to participate should bring a new tool to the November meeting, with a retail value between $10-$25.  We will then do a brief show & tell so you can let our members know why you chose that tool, followed by a Rob-Your-Neighbor style swap.  If your tool retails for less then the amount noted above, please include an additional item/fabric/thread, etc so everyone who participates can walk away with something of a relatively equal value.

  • Jan Ochterbeck, one of our upcoming SewMeSTL Teachers, shared a little about the workshop she will be leading this October based on her book Cut and Shuffle Quilts. She is one of 4 Teachers we will be featuring this Fall, so keep an eye out for more information as it becomes available.
================================================================

Finally, we have some official guild business to attend to, as Kelly Smith, our Secretary for the last 3 years will be stepping down at the end of 2015.  We have not only enjoyed working along-side her; but appreciated her willingness to step up and give back to our guild in so many ways.  Thank You!!

While the other Officers are happy to continue in their roles; should someone be interested in one of those positions (not just the vacant one), they are welcome to follow the process below so they can be put on the ballot.

If you have been a member for at least one year, and have an interest in giving back to the St. Louis MQG by way of becoming an Officer, we would love to hear from you. Please review the process below regarding how elections work within our guild.

1.   All those who would like to be considered for an Officer position, should review the roles [see this document] so they are aware of what is expected from each of the Officers.

2.   Please inform Jamie Mueller, our Election Officiate, of your interest in a position and she will gather the names and provide them to the current Officers on November 1st, so a ballot can be made.

3.   At the November meeting, candidates will have the opportunity to express why they would like your vote for (___) position.

4.   All dues-paying members in attendance at our November meeting will be given a ballot which they will use to vote for the candidate they chose.

Easy Peasy!!

=========================================================

Now, if you are a member who would love to do more; but you don't want to be an Officer, there are always other opportunities available too.  We are always looking for self-starters, who the Officers can count on to assist with various projects and events; which includes making phone calls, gathering item donations, being an STLMQG advocate on social media, and physically being available at meetings/events to help with setup, etc.  Please email us at stlmqg@gmail.com if you are interested.

As we don't have another meeting until November (due to our two large Fall events). Please! Please! keep your eyes on social media, this website, and your inbox as we will be distributing information you need to know for the next two months via those outlets.

=========================================================

We hope to see you in September at the Elizabeth Hartman Trunk Show, or at October's SewMeSTL.

Meeting Recap (July 11th, 2015)

First and foremost, WOW...5 years since we started this journey together and we could not be more proud of what our guild has accomplished by way of bringing people together to learn, to make things that challenge us, and most important to build bonds.  So Thank You!!!

Now, if you missed out on any of this month's activities or announcements, check out the recap and associated links below.

  • Carolyn gave us an update on our Charity Project for this year; which you can still participate in.  Check out this post to learn how you can help us support a great local organization. If you are donating a bag, remember they are due at the August meeting.
  • Thank you to all those who have already designed or will be designing a block for our Block Of The Month.  For those of you who are making the blocks as we go along, we love seeing this sampler come together piece by piece.
  • We collected quite a large assortment of siggie blocks which were mailed to the Charleston MQG earlier this past week, as part of the quilt they are putting together for the Emanual AME Church.  You still have time to participate, check out the info here.
  • Hopefully our lively discussion on Starch and Starch-Alternatives was helpful and you walked away with a better understanding of how and why you would use these items.
  • We hope that the Machine Binding demo went well and for those who are interested in this technique, you can learn more here and here.

Finally, as we gear up for our Fall activities, we know everyone is anxious to sign-up; but we ask that you please be patient with us as we have some last minute things to shore up prior to sending out all of the Info and Sign-Up emails.

Here are the dates of our events, so you can check your calendar.

  • Elizabeth Hartman (September 12th - 13th)
  • SewMeSTL (October 24th - 25th)

Again, Thanks for Five wonderful years.  We look forward to many, many more.

Meeting Recap (March 14th, 2015)

As always, thank you for spending your Saturday with us.  Here is a recap of what happened in case you could not attend, or you missed something.

  • Several members who attended QuiltCon shared their experiences with us...what they saw, what they loved, what they bought, etc.  If you were inspired by what you heard, and would like more information about upcoming conferences, be sure to visit the QuiltCon 2016 and 2017 pages. It's never too early to book your room.
  • Julie from the Charity Committee announced our projects for this year; which can be found on our Charitable Activities page.  If you are a dues-paying member be sure to check your email later today for more detailed information.
  • Casey from the Swap/Challenge Committee led the "Focal Fabric Swap"; which had us learning a bit about curating a collection of fabric.  If you participated, be sure to purchase and bring with you to the April meeting, 4 quilt-shop quality modern fat quarters which are inspired by the focal fabric you borrowed.
  • Kristy went over the MQG State of the Union, including global membership levels reached in 2014, new initiatives and improvements. Here are some highlights (as of Feb 2015):
           ::Globally the MQG has 8161 members, of which 2785 are individual members
           ::There are 139 guilds spread out across all 50 US states, 32 countries, and 6 continents

  • Finally, thanks to all the members who brought Show & Tell.  Your work always inspires us.

Here are some quick announcements you might want to check out.

  • The MQG announced a Call for Entries a few months back, as the Texas Quilt Museum is hosting a juried exhibition and is looking for modern quilts.  All the info you need can be found here.
  • Thimble & Thread's Bi-Annual Quilt Show is Saturday/Sunday March 21st-22nd at the Greensfelder Rec Center at Queeny Park.  Details can be found here.

Meeting #54 - March 14th, 2015

Hello Modern Quilters,

We have much to share this month and hope to see you at our meeting.

Date: March 14th, 2015
Time: 10am - 12:30pm
Location: The Heights

   =================================================================
Agenda:

-Welcome & Guild Business
   :: Membership Information
   :: Financial Information
   :: Special Announcements/Quilting News

-QuiltCon Recap
-Charity Committee Announcement
-Swap/Challenge Committee "Focal Fabric" (Fabric Swap)
-Show & Tell
-Mix & Mingle

-------------------------- FYI ------------------------------

:: Hopefully you have been playing around on Instagram since learning the "Ins & Outs" at February's meeting. Don't forget to use the hashtag #stlmqg when uploading your images, so we can see all of the modern things that you are doing.

:: Interested in participating in the "Focal Fabric" (Fabric Swap) hosted by our very own Member's Swap/Challenge committee.  All those who want to join in the fun should bring a 5" x 5" or larger piece of focal fabric to this month's meeting.  Before the April meeting, participants will purchase 4 coordinating FQs, building a small bundle.  In April, the focal fabric and coordinating bundle will be given to it's original owner.

:: Don't forget to bring your modern Show & Tell projects, new modern fabric or book purchases, etc.  Let's keep it to a limit of 3 though, so everyone has a chance to participate.

:: Finally, don't forget to wear your nametag.  We gathered lots of little goodies from QuiltCon to share with the guild and will be randomly chosing winners from amongst those who wear their nametag.  Are you a member without a nametag, what are you waiting for?  Create a unique one using fabric, embroidery, etc.  It can be any size, any shape...just not a generic paper one pinned to your shirt, or a sticker with your name on it...that's not fun, no matter how you might decorate it.

See You Saturday!!

Meeting Recap (February 14th, 2015)

Thanks to everyone who spent their Valentine's Day morning with us, while we couldn't promise chocolates and wine...we hope that you enjoyed your time.

Now, let's get to the recap:

  • Kelly announced that we have 87 members, as 2 new-to-us visitors joined today.  Welcome!
  • Casey and Jessica from the Member's Swap/Challenge Committee, provided the Pincushion Swap details and with a resounding cheer, we had a table full of intricate pincushions to vote on and swap.  Be sure to check out our #stlmqg hashtag on Instagram to see photos of the pinnies.
  • We asked that members bring their recent pattern and book purchases with them to share a little bit about why they bought them, what they were looking forward to making, etc.  It is our hope that members received some first-person recommendations, and introductions of new to them items.
  • Kristy led an Instagram 101 session and several members were up and running, uploading their first photos and learning about hashtags, swaps, destashes, etc.
  • Following the break, Casey introduced the next swap; which begins March and concludes in April.  All those who are interested in participating should bring a 5" x 5" or larger piece of focal fabric to the March meeting.  Before the April meeting, participants will purchase 4 coordinating FQs, building a small bundle.  In April, the focal fabric and coordinating bundle will be given to it's original owner.

Here are some quick announcements you might want to check out.

  • Have you been interested in purchasing a book by one of C&T's authors?  In honor of those authors who will be attending QuiltCon, C&T is offering a 25% discount. All the details can be found here.

Thanks for another great meeting, see you on March 14th !

:: We would like to ask all attending members who would like to participate to bring in either a pattern (quilting, garment, tote, etc.) or a book (quilting or craft-related) they purchased within the last 6 months.  We would like to ask you to say a few words about why you bought it (interested in the technique, love the author/designer, etc.) and if you have made anything from it, please bring that as well...although that is not necessary.  We hope that this activity will expose our members to new patterns and books which they may not have seen before.

Meeting Recap (January 10th, 2015)

We eased into 2015 with a day filled with games...hoping to kick off the new year in a fun fashion. In case you missed it, we encourage you to check out our new STLMQG Instagram account, as it includes some photos as well as highlights of Show & Tell.

Is one of your resolutions to get your quilts out in front of more people?  There are two upcoming opportunities you should know about.
It is not too late to get in on the Pincushion Swap.  You have 5 whole weeks to finish it, as they are due at our February meeting; which coincidentally is on Valentine's Day this year.  You'll want to be sure to bring your A-Game, as there will be a small prize for the member-chosen winner, and then the swapping and rob-your-neighbor madness starts.

Thanks to everyone who played along in our Guild Games; while we know that some were much more fun then others, we hope that you had some giggles nonetheless.

Until next time, be sure to visit us on Facebook where the conversation never ends.

See you on February 14th!

Meeting Recap (December 13th, 2014)

The Officers would like to wish all of our members a Happy New Year!  Yet before we look towards 2015, let's recap our December meeting.

  • We had another successful annual fundraiser, Rene knows the exact amount; but I believe it was just under $1000.  This will go a long way towards the events and activities we have planned this coming year, so Thank You to everyone who donated and contributed.

  • Our WOW (War on WIP) came to a close with lots of members staying up late to finish those last minute WIP to show them at our meeting.  We are happy to see so many projects being finished this past year.  Krista Robbins was the grand prize winner...and I believe if you follow her on Instagram you saw some of the goodies she purchased with the JanieLou GiftCard.

  • Are you itching to get your work out there in some shows, or looking for a challenge...then do we have news for you.

  • Don't forget about the Pincushion Swap that the Members Swap/Challenge committee created. Your amazingly modern pincushion is due at the February meeting.

  • Want to know the meeting dates for 2015, be sure to check out the Meeting Info tab at the top of our blog.
Thanks for a great 2014.
We will see you soon on January 10th.
