Meeting Recap (October 10th, 2020)

 Guild Business:

We started the meeting with a quick welcome to all the new members and guests who joined for this meeting. Then we jumped right in:

  • Tess, our Treasurer, covered our financials.
  • Pam, our VP, mentioned that not much is happening in person right now.
  • Lilo, our Secretary, gave a quick update on membership numbers and attendance.
  • 2020 Elections, next month! While nominations were technically due October 1st, we did not get any submissions for Vice President or Secretary. We will keep nominations open until October 16th in hopes of filling these positions.  A description of all positions can be found on our member drive. See the details below to submit your name for one of our open positions.
    • Elections will be held during the November meeting (Nov 14th) via Zoom. Per our bylaws, you must be present to cast a vote.
    • Open Positions
      • President and Secretary; one year, completing the remainder of unexpired terms. (To explain why secretary will be on the ballot; Lilo will be resigning as secretary in order to run for president.)
      • Vice President and Treasurer; two year terms
    • Must be a member for one year to run
    • To submit your name for any position, please contact Susan Muszynski, smuszynski22@gmail.com. We would love to see you step up!
    • Nominations preferred by October 1st.
    • We will also vote on whether or not to remain with the MQG, an annual vote required by the by-laws.
  • Committee Sign Ups: Open Now!
    • See the Member Drive or the recap email for the online sign up form and details of the committee responsibilities. You may also email stlmqg@gmail.com with your preferred committee.
  • Dues: We know it's been a tough year for everyone. We know, too, that while we've been doing our best, the guild may not be filling your quilting social life in the way we all prefer, but hopefully we have been able to bring you exposure, educational opportunities, and experiences that are still meaningful. We also hope that by being as upfront as possible about the upcoming year you will stick with us and join us again in 2021!
    • Still $40 for the year. (Yay!)
    • Collecting now through December 31st.
    • Pay via the website or mail a check to Tess. Please contact Tess directly if you intend to mail her a check so she knows it is coming. Cell:  314-440-6300
  • G.A.P.
Members may contribute to the Guild Assistance Program (G.A.P.) These funds will then be distributed to other members whose financial circumstances are preventing them from being involved in the guild. If you feel you may be in need of these funds, click on the G.A.P. link for how to apply.

  • 2021 Sew Me STL: It is with heavy heart that the board and the Sew Me committee must announce we are canceling the 2021 Sew Me event. When we considered all the major factors - the incredible amount of planning, the financial commitment, and the safety of our members and volunteers - it was clear this was the responsible decision to make. With no space for us in the fall, and an uncertainty if the current world situation will even allow it, we have decided to put our efforts into 2022. We have, however, left some space in the budget and in the 2021 fall calendar for one or two small scale sew-ins should the pandemic allow for it. Let's all keep our fingers crossed!
  • 2021 Quilt Show: The quilt show is currently scheduled for July 16-18, 2021 at the Kirkwood Community Center. We have until February 2021 to make a decision without losing any of the deposit and so the committee and the board will reconvene in January of 2021 and make a final decision on that event. We apologize for the uncertainty, but feel uncomfortable canceling or committing so far out when things are changing so rapidly at this time.
Main Event:
This month's main event was a spotlight event where we showcased all the members who own quilting/sewing related businesses. Whether it is their main gig or a side hustle, all are valuable resources that show the depth of our best resource - each other. It was truly lovely to hear so many of them re-introduce themselves and what they are up to, as well as see some examples of their work!

A more robust version of this spreadsheet, including contact information and details of each business, is located in the member drive and is linked in the meeting recap email. If you feel we have missed anyone, we encourage you to contact us at stlmqg@gmail.com.

QuiltCon Charity Project:
Thank you to everyone who's submitted blocks for our QuiltCon quilt! We were able to collect enough blocks and the committee is working hard to get the quilt pieced, quilted, and bound in time to submit photos to the QuiltCon Committee. We can't wait to see the end result.

Guild Assistance Program (GAP)

Announcing the Guild Assistance Program (G.A.P.)

As COVID continues to affect the economy and those around us in unexpected and unplanned ways, the guild wants to make sure no one is left behind due to the inability to pay our dues. To achieve this, we have established the Guild Assistance Program, or G.A.P..

  • Current members may donate to the fund when they renew their dues for the year here
  • Individuals who are unable to pay part of or the full amount of our yearly dues are welcome to email the board (stlmqg@gmail.com) to ask for financial assistance.
  • Donations and request are confidential. We trust folks will be honest in their requests.
  • Requests should be received by the yearly dues deadline. They will be evaluated as a whole after that deadline. Funds will be distributed based on their availability and the number of requests received.

Our research indicates that many guilds have programs such as this but get few enough requests for assistance that their boards can handle it on a case by case basis and let it evolve naturally as it, and their guild, grows. It is our intention to use the first year or two to see if there is an interest in contributing as well as a need within our community for such a program. If so, we can't wait to see how it grows and trust future boards to flesh out parameters as needed.
