Meeting Recap (December 11th, 2021)

Thank you to everyone who came out to Saturday's meeting and participated in the raffle! It was a great way to finish the year and we had a blast!

We covered a few bits of housekeeping:

  • It's time to pay your 2022 dues, which are holding steady at $40 for next year. You can pay via our Square Link. Dues are due by December 31 to remain a member in good standing. You can renew in January but it's best to do so early so you can stay in the loop with our emails - since if you are not renewed by the 31st your name gets removed from the email list.
  • 2022 committee sign-ups are still open! The link to sign ups will be in this week's email.
  • All our final PICU quilts were collected and thanks to everyone generous quilt making we were able to split our donations to two different hospitals - thanks to everyone who made this such a successful donation!
  • We said a huge thank you to our outgoing board members, who have helped see us through some truly strange times this last year. We especially appreciate all you've done, Lilo Whitener-Fey (President) in stepping up these last few years to get us through all the zooms and back to our regularly scheduled (tho still masked) programming. The guild also presented Lilo with a beautiful quilt made with love by all the members - to say thanks for all of her hard work and leadership. Thanks go out to all the guild members who sent in blocks and helped put together and piece the top, as well as a special thank you to Dottie Vaughn who did some beautiful quilting, as well as Christine Boyd for being sneaky collecting blocks and doing some big-stitch binding!

  • The highlight of our meeting was the big ticket raffle. Thanks to all the members you donated and made it such a special event - we had well over 150 items! An extra special thanks to those who purchased additional tickets to make the fundraiser such a success. We hope you had fun and got to go home with a fun new item or two.
  • We wrapped up the meeting with another great Show and Tell - keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook page to see pictures of quilts that were shared, and to stay up to date on what's to come next year!

  • October Meeting Holiday Cards - We will be making holiday cards to send to local nursing homes in the area - check out some of the tutorials ahead of time in the link in your email to prep for the meeting - things to bring with you: glue, scissors, pinking shears, markers/pens, large needle/thread, trim, sequins, beads, fabric (holiday-specific and whatever else).

  • Quilt Photography - Angela Armstrong (@todd_studios)

Angela has started out as a family photographer but recently connected with guild president Lilo Whitener-Fey to help her take photos for her business Trace Creek Quilting. Angela & Lilo have learned a lot through their adventures in photo taking and Angela was kind enough to share some of her best tips & tricks.

    Things to take pictures of:
    - Full length of the quilt
    - Details of the fabric
    - Details of the quilting
    - Details of the backing

Use Instagram, Pinterest & Google search to get ideas of how to display your quilt - so many options of how to fold or drape quilts.

Check out STL parks! There are tons of great photo places around St. Louis - check out the parks around you for great places to start. Cool walls, buildings, sculptures - always keep your eyes peeled for interesting locations!

Bring a quilt photo 'toolbox' with things like scissors, tacks, hammer, step stool, lint roller, double-sided tape, etc...

Consider the time of day - mornings and late afternoons work best - noon is a harsh time of day as well as weather - the wind is not your friend!

Angela covered different lighting settings and how to make the most of them, or what to avoid such as having the light behind you - this can cause the quilt holder to show up in the photo which is probably not your goal. If you're shooting photos inside - make sure you shoot near a window - move your furniture or find props to use but make use of the natural light.

Don't forget the details! Use the all the swirls and twists to make your up-close photos interesting - but you want to record the close-up details of your quilt.

Editing apps and cameras - make use of your phone - newer phones have a portrait mode and this can be an awesome way to get great pictures of the details while also blurring the background. Use the setting in the camera & in the photos app you can usually use the editing features that come with your phone to do things like bumping up the contrast and clarity. But you can make use of free apps out there like Studio, Snapseed, or PicCollage to quickly edit from your phone.

  • Fabric Raffle
Thanks to another very generous donation from our sponsor Cotton Cuts we had two excited members win some awesome fabric and goodies!

Bring the quilts to the November meeting. Distance members can email photos to the guild to be included in the drawing. Two winners will be drawn at the November meeting to receive gift certificates.

  • Quiltcon Community Challenge
This year's quilt is an interpretation of a map that depicts the racial diversity/integration in the STL metro area.

Segregation in STL is a deeply rooted issue based on hundreds of years of discriminatory policies and practices. While progress is made every day, it will not be overcome easily and it continues to negatively affect many aspects of our region, including, one could argue, our own guild. We hope members will delve more deeply into this as well as reflect a bit on where their house falls within this quilt and what circumstances have contributed to that as they make their blocks. We hope this ties in with the themes we have heard recently from the SJSA and Color of Connection Quilt including that change starts with the individual and it's time to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

We intend to make packets of instructions for members to sign out. Each packet will be responsible for 2 blocks. We will have a total of around 85 packets. We started handing this month with an expected return of September or October.

  • Charity Committee Summer/ Fall Project - we are making small quilts for the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (CG PICU). Our goal is 60 quilts - please check out the blog post for more information about sizes, color schemes and deadlines. Make sure to share your finished quilts on social using #stlmqg, #stlmqgcares, and #stlmqgPICUquilts!
  • Vet Quilts - the deadline for these quilts has been pushed back to November so this will allow folks more time to work on these and help reach our goal. Read more here.

  • What is Modern?? Kristy Daum

“Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design.  Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt.

These include but are not limited to, the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.

"Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.”

    - Definition for Modern Quilting as found on The Modern Quilt Guild website

Kristy walked us through some examples of some her own modern makes - as well as talking through how Modern Quilting has and is constantly evolving, and how at the heart of it all we are ALL Quilters - there is room for everyone in this craft!

Meeting #112 (August 14th, 2021)

Our first IN-PERSON MEETING in 18 months is happening this Saturday from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Shrewsbury Center - see the Meeting and Events Tab for information. With the COVID numbers on the rise, we will be taking precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy and we will be following the CDC guidelines for wearing masks. All members will be required to wear masks regardless of vaccine status. We will also have theatre seating to ensure that you are able to keep a safe distance.

For those who need to play it safe and wish to stay at home, we are still planning on Zooming the meeting so you can still join in! The link and info will be sent to your member email later this week.

Note from guild President Lilo:

The board of this guild is very much aware of the ever-changing situation of COVID and we want to be clear that the well-being and safety of our members and their families is our biggest concern as we try to navigate this situation. After careful consideration, we do feel like it is possible to safely meet in person as long as we, as a collective, are conscientious, caring, and respectful of those within our community. With that in mind, masks will be required for all meeting attendees, regardless of vaccination status. This is per CDC recommendations and out of respect for those in our group who are themselves or have loved ones at home that are vulnerable or have not yet been able to be vaccinated. There is a Zoom option for each meeting throughout the remainder of 2021 for those who are unable/choose not to attend in person.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and consideration of those around you.
Lilo Whitener-Fey
President, 2021
