Meeting Recap (December 12th, 2020)

Did everyone leave the meeting and immediately start refolding your quilts? HA! For those of you that missed out please read through the summary below to see if you, too, need to refold all of your quilts. :)

  • Pam, our VP, shared several quilt-a-longs coming up in 2021 and a few members chimed in with additional details.
  • Lilo, our Secretary, mentioned that membership numbers are looking down for 2021, which is to be expected, and reminded everyone interested to pay their dues by the end of the year.
  • January Meeting: A fun scavenger hunt from right in your chair as well as a collective list of member recommended online quilt activities. Please see the recap email for the link to share your recommendations with us!!
Items Covered:
  • Committee Sign Ups: Last Call!
    • See the Member Drive or the recap email for the online sign up form and details of the committee responsibilities. You may also email stlmqg@gmail.com with your preferred committee.
  • Dues: Due by the end of 2020.
    • Still $40 for the year. (Yay!)
    • Collecting now through December 31st. After that folks will be removed from the STLMQG and MQG rosters as well as the email list.
    • Pay via the website, PayPalor mail a check to Tess. Please contact Tess directly if you intend to mail her a check so she knows it is coming. Cell:  314-440-6300.
  • Recap: November and December Sewcials - Orphan Blocks and References and Resource Material:
    • Tess gave a quick recap of the two discussions had in November and December. A robust list of References and Resource Materials has been posted on the Member Drive, see your recap email for the link!
  • Zoom Use:
    • Please remember the STLMQG Zoom account is available to any guild member wishing to have a quilt related gathering! Just email stlmqg@gmail.com to get things set up.
  • Update Your Information!
    • Be sure to check the Member Drive Roster to make sure your information is up to date!
  • LEO Quilt Drive:
    • Terry Darling gave us a heartwarming summary of the guild's charity quilt efforts: we collected 80 quilts to donate to our local law enforcement officers' trunks for folks in need. What an incredible accomplishment during such a crazy year! Well done, STLMQG! Terry also drew Marianne B as her winner for some lovely charm packs. Thanks to Marianne, and everyone else who donated!
  • Raffles and Prizes
    • BOM: To wrap up this year's BOM, Pam drew 4 winners for our remaining color cards. Congrats to our winners!
    • Fabric Raffle: Another killer batch of fabric donated by our sponsor, Cotton Cuts! Tess M and Katie M, we can't wait to see what you do with them!
    Main Event:
Cindy Stuart, a certified quilt appraiser, gave us a WONDERFUL presentation that covered some insider information on the appraisal process as well as some excellent tips for how to care for your quilts, both old and new.  We learned several interesting facts like when you are finishing an older quilt top, it is best to finish it in the manner and with materials that represent the time in which it was started. We also learned that quilts are like grandmothers, and you should treat them as such. We don't put grandmas in attics, the washing machine, or in the direct sunlight, so we shouldn't do the same with our quilts. Tips on how to store, fold, and clean you quilts have likely got many of us busy at work making adjustments in our own homes. Thank you so much, Cindy, for such a lighthearted and informative presentation!

    2020 Wrap up:

During the meeting, the board publicly thanked the folks who were so instrumental in keep us going strong through 2020. These folks stepped up when others were unable and the entire guild is better for their efforts. Another thank you to the committees and their chairs, particularly Robyn Passig, Jenn Deck, and Terry Darling. Also to the QuiltCon Charity Quilt group and their volunteers, specifically: Jessica Schunke, Marianne Belcke, Annie Cook, and Susan Muszynski. Three additional outstanding individuals throughout the year were Nancy Dlugosz, Kim Moos, and Susan Muszynski. We also want to make sure to thank Emily Amizich for all her work this year, and Pam Hartig and Tess McMahon whose board terms are complete. Because of all of you, members who could not step up did not have to yet the guild is a thriving organization for the benefit of all who chose to return in 2021. Thank you.

Well, that's a wrap on the unforgettable 2020. We would love for everyone to rejoin us in January for a brand new start to a brand new year. Keep an eye on the tabs to the right for updates on Zoom Sewcials, BOMs, HSHHs, and all the other activities and events we can't wait to bring you.

Take care, stay safe, wear your masks, and we will see you when we see you!

    Meeting Recap (November 14th, 2020)

What a lovely meeting! The day was chilly and rainy but no one had to go out into it to soak in a little quilt love, knowledge, and sharing. Thanks for joining!

    Guild Business:

    • Tess, our Treasurer, covered our financials. We also announced that the P&L statements for 2019, 2018, and 2017 as well as summaries of our big events (speakers/workshops, quilt show, and SewMe) have been added to the Member Google Drive. See your email for a direct link. A big thank you to Gayle Larson, Gail Luther, and Tess for compiling that information so it is at our fingertips.
    • Pam, our VP, pointed us toward quilt related documentaries, films, and books as the metro area moves toward another pandemic lockdown. She also asked that any outstanding library books be returned via the dropboxes.
    • Lilo, our Secretary, gave a quick update on membership numbers and attendance. She also announced that the board will be sending out a quick survey this month to collect some information important for planning in 2021. Please see your recap email for the link.
    • 2020 Elections:
      • The membership overwhelmingly agreed to stay with the MQG for 2021.
      • 2021 Board: We only had one nomination per open position so there was no need for an actual vote. A big thank you to Susan Muszynski who stepped up to collect names and to those who volunteered to be on the board in 2021. The following members will assume these positions in January 2021.
        • President: Lilo Whitener-Fey

    Events:
Mark your calendars for some fun meetings and events coming up! Be sure to click on the links to get all the details we have available at this time.
    • Recap: October's All Day Sew Day: Pam gave a quick recap of the All Day Sew Day hosted in October. Though attendance was around 20 at any give time, several members popped in and out when they could and it was a fun time all day. Thank you to Nancy D, Pam H, and Tess M for their tutorials and to everyone who dropped in to say hello! Here are a few photos posted to #stlmqgsewday.
    • Recap: October's Sewcial - Design Walls: Tess gave a quick recap of the discussion on Design Walls. As most folks dropped in for suggestions, there is no recap document for this month.
    • Upcoming: November's Sewcial - Orphan Blocks.
      • Thursday, November 19th, 7-8pm
      • Zoom link will be in the recap email as well as in an email the night before.
    • Upcoming: Quilt Appraiser, Cindy Stuart!
    • Upcoming: Suzy Williams, Suzy Quilts!
      • February meeting
      • Must be a member to attend.
    • Upcoming: Tara Faughnan, color master!
      • Virtual trunk show and two classes
      • April 30-May 2
    • 2021 Sew Me STL: It is with heavy heart that the board and the Sew Me committee must announce we are canceling the 2021 Sew Me event. When we considered all the major factors - the incredible amount of planning, the financial commitment, and the safety of our members and volunteers - it was clear this was the responsible decision to make. With no space for us in the fall, and an uncertainty if the current world situation will even allow it, we have decided to put our efforts into 2022. We have, however, left some space in the budget and in the 2021 fall calendar for one or two small scale sew-ins should the pandemic allow for it. Let's all keep our fingers crossed!
    • 2021 Quilt Show: The quilt show is currently scheduled for July 16-18, 2021 at the Kirkwood Community Center. We have until February 2021 to make a decision without losing any of the deposit and so the committee and the board will reconvene in January of 2021 and make a final decision on that event. We apologize for the uncertainty, but feel uncomfortable canceling or committing so far out when things are changing so rapidly at this time.
    Main Event:
Susan Muszynski wanted to learn more about quilt marking tools. She documented her findings and then presented them to the guild so we could all learn from her experience. Throughout the presentation members contributed their own feedback and experiences and we had a marvelous exchange of knowledge. Susan has compiled a list of resources and we have posted it on the Member Google Drive. Thanks so much, Susan! It was a valuable presentation.

    QuiltCon Charity Project:
Thank you to everyone who's submitted blocks for our QuiltCon quilt! We were able to collect enough blocks and the committee has pieced it together - be sure to check your recap email for a photo of what they hoped for, and what we delivered!! Stay tuned next month for a photo of the finished quilt after Annie Cook works her quilting magic!

    BOM:
In October we selected our last fabric challenge type and everyone finished up their blocks! As Instagram had frozen hashtags up until the meeting we are delaying selecting our participant winners until December. We will be giving out 4 color cards such as Grunge, Kona, and AGF Pure Solids! Here are some of the fun blocks posted throughout the year!

    Postcard Challenge:
This year our challenge was to make a postcard inspired quilt! We had a special show and share dedicated to our Postcard Challenge participants. You all are creative!! Here are a couple posted to #stlmqgpostcardchallenge by Angie and Pam. Can you tell which is the photo and which is the fabric version??

    Fabric Raffle:
This month's raffle was two fat quarter bundles from Windham's Norma Rose collection. These are so fresh we don't even have them in hand yet! Congratulations to Angie Henderson and Emily DuBois for winning these beauties, they will be shipped as soon as they arrive.

It was truly lovely to hear so many of them re-introduce themselves and what they are up to, as well as see some examples of their work!

    Guild Assistance Program (GAP)

Announcing the Guild Assistance Program (G.A.P.)

As COVID continues to affect the economy and those around us in unexpected and unplanned ways, the guild wants to make sure no one is left behind due to the inability to pay our dues. To achieve this, we have established the Guild Assistance Program, or G.A.P..

    • Current members may donate to the fund when they renew their dues for the year here
    • Individuals who are unable to pay part of or the full amount of our yearly dues are welcome to email the board (stlmqg@gmail.com) to ask for financial assistance.
    • Donations and request are confidential. We trust folks will be honest in their requests.
    • Requests should be received by the yearly dues deadline. They will be evaluated as a whole after that deadline. Funds will be distributed based on their availability and the number of requests received.

Our research indicates that many guilds have programs such as this but get few enough requests for assistance that their boards can handle it on a case by case basis and let it evolve naturally as it, and their guild, grows. It is our intention to use the first year or two to see if there is an interest in contributing as well as a need within our community for such a program. If so, we can't wait to see how it grows and trust future boards to flesh out parameters as needed.

Next was a super fun share where members submitted photos of their sewing spaces and then talked a bit about them during the meeting. It was a big hit and we really enjoyed seeing the places where members express their creativity. Below are some of the show stoppers, thanks to everyone for sharing!!
