Meeting Recap (July 8th, 2017)

Thanks for spending your Saturday with us. Read on to see what happened and what you need to know.

• Marie, our Vice-President, provided lots of quilting/crafting announcements

• Krista, our Treasurer, gave us the updated financial info including a reminder that we recently paid for the Lecture/Workshop and associated fees with Amy Friend's visit last month. She also reminded all of us that the Quilt Show would be taking a large chunk when it was finished.

• Don't forget about our ongoing charitable project; which is to make Little Dresses for Africa and Britches for Boys.  All items are due at our September meeting; which is quickly approaching. To read all about it, check out this link which gives you all the info.

• The Quilt Show Committee provided updates on our first show and what to expect when volunteering, attending, etc.

• Dottie announced that our guild would once again be participating in the QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge. She showed the block that our members would be making and advised that more info would be coming soon.

• We held our Quilting Relay Race; which was tons of fun and got people up and out of their seats, cheering on their teammates. Congratulations to the winning table!

• SewMeSTL, our annual in-town quilting retreat will be here in a few short months. If you are a dues-paying member, an email was sent a few weeks back with info on booking your room, and signing up to be a workshop teacher...if that interest you.  

• We closed the meeting with Show & Tell...always a winner!  Check out our IG page to see many of the items which were shown.

• Kristy announced that this was her final year as President of the STLMQG, and that a special election will take place at the September meeting for this position.  An email was sent out to all dues-paying members with this announcement, as well as info on how to put your name into the ring for President, or any of the other Officer positions.

Please be sure to check into social media now and again to see what your fellow members are working on, and definitely check your Inbox as we sent a few important emails about Officers, SewMeSTL, Hand-Sew Happy Hour, etc.

:: Don't forget your Show & Tell items, what have you been working on, what exciting modern fabrics have you purchased and are excited about using, what books and or patterns are inspiring you lately.

:: There will not be a fabric raffle this month, instead we are raffling off the second of our SewMeSTL rooms, so don't forget your cash. Tickets are $5 each.

:: We all know our guild is filled with lots of talent; but sometimes there are small things that we assume everyone knows how to do. Are you particularly good at something?  Consider sharing a quick tip with the guild at our August meeting. We are looking for quick demos (between 5-10 min) that show things like: 
          - How to square up a quilt
          - Getting an accurate 1/4" seam
          - Glue Basting
          - How to do an accurate mitered corner
          - Basting Techniques
          - Etc.

Just a reminder that we will not have a meeting this month due to scheduling conflicts each June at The Heights; but we hope you will take this opportunity to do something quilt-related this weekend.

• Garden of Glass opens at the Missouri Botanical Gardens
• Summer Sampler 2017 starts on Monday May 15th. You can purchase the pattern here.
• STLMQG Hand-Sew Happy Hour is Tuesday May 16th at Urban Chestnut, in the Grove
• Cindy Lammon is hosting the RIN Along (Hand Applique) using Carolyn Friedlander's pattern.  For more information, visit Hyacinth Quilts.
• The next MQG Virtual Sew Day is Sunday, May 21st. If you are sewing, quilting, crafting, or even buying fabric that day, be sure to post a photo to Instagram and use the hashtag #mqgsewday

• The Charity Committee quickly reminded everyone about our project for this year; which is to make Little Dresses for Africa and Britches for Boys.  All items are due at our September meeting. To read all about it, check out this link which gives you all the info.

• The Members Swap/Challenge Committee got our Container Swap going. 

• The Quilt Show Committee provided updates on our first show, including reminding everyone on the times in which they can drop off their quilts.

• We held a Publishing Panel, providing information on publishing a book, quilt patterns, submitting to magazines, etc.  Thank you to Casey, Jan, Krista and Kristy for sharing your background, comments and experiences with the guild.

• We played a quick Getting To Know you game; which caused quite a stir and a lot of laughter.

• We closed the meeting with Show & Tell...always a winner!  Check out our IG page to see many of the items which were shown.

Meeting Recap (April 8th, 2017)

• Marie jumped head first into her new role as VP, with a Book Report to re-energize our library. She followed that up with lots of quilting/crafting announcements about things happening around town..
• Stitch St. Charles (May 23rd-25th) is a sewing, quilting and creative event. 
• Hearts N Hands Quilt Guild (O'Fallon, IL) is sponsoring several lectures/workshops from Ebony Love, Gyleen Fitzgerald and Cheryl Sleboda. 
• The Quilted Fox is teaching Painless Paper Piecing on Wed. April 12th.
• Interested in participating in some Instagram Swaps? Check out Orphan Hexie Swap, Urban Home Goods swap, Fat Quarter Friends Swap, and Summer Lovin Very Mini Quilt Swap
• The next MQG Virtual Sew Day is Sunday, April 23rd.  If you are sewing, quilting, crafting, or even buying fabric that day, be sure to post a photo to Instagram and use the hashtag #mqgsewday

• Jessica, our Secretary, spoke about our membership numbers, monthly fabric raffle and got our Hand-Sew Roundtable Demos started.

• The Charity Committee announced our project for the year which is to make Little Dresses for Africa and Britches for Boys.  All items are due at our September meeting. To read all about it, check out this link which gives you all the info.

• The Member's Swap/Challenge Committee announced our first swap which is all about Containers.
• Please make an approx 8inch "container" and bring it to the May meeting, there is no sign-ups. If you bring one, you'll swap one. The key is to think about making something other than a zippered pouch. There are lots of fun pods, boxes, baskets, bowls, etc. which you can make and swap.  A quick look through Pinterest or Instagram will give you lots of inspiration. Don't forget to share your work on Instagram using the hashtag #stlmqg.

• While most of the Quilt Show Committee was absent, the announcement that we are having our first STLMQG Quilt Show was made.  The committee has put in A LOT of time behind the scenes to get this going and once everything is finalized, the info will be dispersed to all members and announcements posted on social media.  For now, there are two dates you should know about.
• April 30th : The due date for submitting a photo of one, two, or more of your modern quilts/small items.  How to submit will be explained in the coming week.
• July 15th & 16th : The date of the Quilt Show itself. We hope to see you there.

There are also some announcements we made earlier in the month, year that we want to ensure that everyone checks into as well.

• The Fresh Quilting episodes featuring many of your favorite modern quilters is now streaming on the MQG Community Site, under Resources. You will need a username/password to access the site; but if you are a dues-paying member of the STLMQG, you were sent an email with this information soon after you signed up.
• Finally, don't forget that we are proud to announce that Amy Friend @duringquiettime is joining the STLMQG this June for a trunk show and two workshops.  Check out the community announcement here. If you are a new dues-paying member and are interested in taking a workshop, please reach out to Jessica Schunke.
• Our guild is once again holding our annual sewing retreat, SewMeSTL, which is October 14th & 15th. A reminder email will be sent out in the coming week.

Charity Project 2017

St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild - Charity Project 2017

Every year the STLMQG sponsors a sewing project for charity. This year we will be donating children’s dresses and pants to Little Dresses for Africa and Britches for Boys. 

From their website,

“…these dresses are so much more than just something to wear.  These dresses go as little Ambassadors all over the world to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy.  These dresses give the distributors an opportunity to meet and encourage those in need and to identify areas that can be addressed with help from the USA such as clean water and education.  Relationships are formed and information is shared.” 

We have provided two simple dress patterns for your use: one with raglan sleeves and a pillowcase style dress. However, simple dresses from any pattern are accepted. Boys’ shorts and pants are also in high demand. A pattern to adapt a tee-shirt into pants is listed below. The pant pattern is very similar to pajama pants. Feel free to use a pajama pant pattern with other fabric if desired. (Elastic or drawstring waist only, please.)

When choosing fabric for the dresses and pants, please pick fabrics that will wash and wear well. For example, the sheer white fabric with tiny daisies may be pretty, but would be prone to staining and ripping.

Please mark the approximate size on the clothing. You can use a fabric marker or attach a tag with a safety pin (please, no straight pins!).

We will be collecting the dresses and pants at the September 9th meeting, and we can’t wait to see what you make!
