Meeting Recap (August 8th, 2020)

What a mind blowing presentation given by Sara Trails, founder of the Social Justice Sewing Academy! Similarly to how we started the meeting, let's just jump right into the recap: 

Guest Speaker:

Sara gave an excellent overview of her journey of being a young, celebrated sewer and how it evolved into an organization that gives a voice to youth who are often marginalized and unheard. She gave us some mind blowing examples of what these young folks are able to accomplish when given the opportunity to express themselves. Last, but certainly not least, Sara shared with us how WE can help on both an individual level and as a guild. Thank you, Sara, for such a wonderful experience.

• October Meeting Topic: Call for Member Run Businesses! If you own/work for/play a significant part in a sewing/quilting related business/organization we would like to know! Not only would we like to feature you at our October meeting, we would also like to compile a list to share with the membership so folks know who within our community they can reach to when they need your services. Please completing this form. Reach out to other guild members and encourage them to do the same! 
• Zoom Sewcials: Tess McMahon and Nancy Duglosz have put together a list of quick and fun quilting topics and will be hosting these conversations via Zoom throughout the fall. Our first one is Wednesday, July 29, 7-8 PM and the topic is Quilt Labels. Please see the 'Zoom Sewcial' tab to the right for more details and future topics. 
• QuiltCon 2021 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge! We encourage you to view the Blog Post and recap email for all the details. We would really love for each member to make one block, deadline is September 30th. 
  
  
  
• Call for Election Officiant: Officer Elections are coming up in November and Emily put a call out for a volunteer to collect the names of those interested in running. The open positions are Treasurer and Vice President, both 2 year terms. Further details about running coming next month.

• SewMe Committee: Reminder that SewMe dates have been moved to March 12-14, 2021. 
• Quilt Show Committee: "The Quilt Show Committee is incorporating Social Distancing into many aspects of our 2021 Quilt Show. As you are planning and making quilts, please consider uniqueness over quantity so we can include quilts from all our members and display a wide variety of modern quilts. We are targeting March 2021 to start accepting quilt submissions." -Robyn Passig and the Quilt Show Committee

BOM Fabric #8 (August): Metallic

Metallics are fabrics that include a gold or silver metallic element to them. The metallic section has a different sheen and texture to the touch which adds a whole new level of fun to a project!

Fabric Raffle:
While we utilize Zoom, meeting fabric raffles have transitioned to an online format and will be live from the Tuesday meeting reminder until about 11am during the meeting. Links will be provided. QuiltCon 2021 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge

STLMQG Block Instructions

Hello STLMQG guild members! We’re excited to reveal the plan for this year’s guild QuiltCon quilt. As we are all well aware, things are a bit different this year, so our plan is taking those circumstances into account with more freedom and the ability to let members participate is as low-key of a way as possible.

DETAILS:

--All participating members should make ONE 4”, 6”, or 8” square block (finished sizes, so 4.5”, 6.5”, or 8.5” square unfinished).

--The block should consist of only one simple curved element. Examples include a circle, an arc or improv “hill,” bias tape appliqué, an orange peel, a drunkard’s path, etc. You’ll find a list of suggested tutorials at the end of this document. This is not the time to get all fancy with an intricate block. The blocks should be simple individually, but the combination will serve as the “signatures” of all of our guild members. While we may be separated at this time, our shared love of quilting will bring us together. The example to the left is what we’re envisioning for the final quilt.

--Needle-turn appliqué is acceptable, but please do not use raw-edge or machine appliqué (consider the inset/6-minute circle tutorial for an alternative to “visible” machine appliqué).

--Each block should be composed of just TWO fabrics in any combination of the challenge colors shown below (for example, white and royal blue, red-orange and cheddar orange, navy and light blue, etc.)

Fabric Requirements:

--All fabrics should be MODERN and quilt-shop quality.

--You may use solids, tone-on-tone prints, or “basics” that combine two of the colors (but no more than two colors, including white). Basics include simple, small-scale geometric prints, such as dots and lines. The photo below includes some examples of acceptable fabrics.

--The suggested matching solids are listed below. While you do not have to use an exact matching solid, it should be as close as possible to ensure there is consistency across the quilt. You are also welcome to use solids from brands other than those listed; do your best to match them to the provided color palette. Please do not use low-volume prints unless they only include the colors shown above (so no gray low volumes, for instance). White should be as close to pure white as you have; please try to avoid anything too creamy or with a yellow undertone.

Deadline:

--Blocks are due by Sept. 30. Blocks can be turned in via one of the guild drop boxes or by mailing them to Jessica Schunke. You can find her contact information on the Roster in the Member Drive.

The challenge quilts have to be submitted to QuiltCon much earlier this year, so we will not be able to accept late blocks. But this assignment is so easy, we know you won’t have any trouble getting yours in on time.

Meeting Recap (July 11, 2020)

Success!! It's not as rambunctious or colorful as our usual meetings, but the general consensus is that the Zoom format is going to work out just fine! Thanks to everyone who attended. Here is how it went:

• Perennial is having a Waxed Denim Apron class later this month
• MQG has regular webinars and lectures, including the upcoming "Taking Photos for Quilt Show Entry" and "Curved Piecing: Beyond the Drunkards Path"
• QuiltCon Together Registration is Wednesday, July 15th @ 9am!! If you are interested, be prepared. Classes have gone fast in years past. 
• Lilo, our Secretary, gave a quick update on membership numbers and attendance. 

Announcements: 

• Upcoming Speaker: We couldn't be more excited to announce Sara Trail, Founder of the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) as a guest speaker for our August meeting. June Non-Meeting and Social Recap (June 13, 2020)

Recap: June 13th Zoom Social

Boy it was great to see your faces!! Thanks so much to everyone who was able to participate. We saw Christine from her car, had a dizzying tour of Angie's workspace, and some absolutely lovely quilts both finished and in-progress! This experience has allowed the guild to make some decisions about how to move forward for the rest of 2020 and we have lots of information to share at this time. 

Remainder of our 2020 Meetings:

• Format: Zoom
• Time: 10-11:30am
• Dates: Second Saturday of the Month, see the Meeting and Event tab for a list of dates.
• How to Join: MEMBERS: The link will be included in the pre-meeting email sent the Tuesday before the meeting as well as again the Friday evening before the meeting so it is at the top of your inbox.  NON-MEMBERS: May request to join a meeting by completing an online form. 
• Additional Information: We have compiled a How To/FAQ document to help introduce you to Zoom. It will be included in all emails that contain a Zoom link. It is accessible at anytime on the Member Drive. 

STLMQG 10 Year Birthday Party!

• Date: July 25th
• Location: World's Fair Pavilion, Forest Park
• Time: 6pm
• We will spread out in the shade of the pavilion or nearby grass, working hard to observe a 6 foot distance from each other at all times. Must Haves: Your own chair and mask. Strongly Encouraged: Name tag, a beverage for hydration or otherwise, take out, hand sanitizer and your latest creation for others to see!
• This will also be a collection point for anything you wish to turn in - charity projects, block lotto blocks, etc. If Pennant Swap partners are both done and attending, feel free to go ahead and swap!

STLMQG Zoom Account Available to Members

• The Guild is happily sharing the STLMQG Zoom account with our members. Committees, Hand Sew Happy Hours, Bees, Traveling Quilt Groups, just a group of ladies discussing the latest MQG webinar.... Please feel free to use it to connect with other members during this isolating time. Tess McMahon, our Treasurer, is coordinating these meetings. Contact her directly to make arrangements!

Calls for Volunteers: 

• Drop Boxes: In order for members to turn in any activity items, we would like to establish drop boxes on members' porches around the region. Other members can then drive to the closest drop box to them and turn in their items. Once a month or so, the board with make a run to empty all the boxes. Please know that at no time will these address be released to the public, only to other guild members. Know, too, that the intent is for this to be a no contact drop box: members can come, drop items in the box, and then leave, all without disturbing the occupants. Complete this form if you are willing to host a drop box for us!
• QuiltCon Charity Challenge: The QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge has begun and we need to get on the ball! This year's theme is curves and has a lovely bright palette of oranges and blues. We have some responses but are still looking for a couple more individuals who can take on the organization of this challenge on behalf of the guild. Please email stlmqg@gmail.com if you are interested in being a part of that team. The overall guidelines can be found here, as well as in the April email from the MQG.

June Updates and Reminders

Hello, friends!! Just a quick reminder that there is no official meeting this month nor a speaker. There are, however, some fun things happening so read on!

Zoom Social Gathering: June 13th, 10-11am
As COVID-19 forces everyone to rethink how they live, work, and gather, we must also adjust. The STLMQG now has a Zoom account and invites you to be our testing guinea pigs as we work to learn how to best gather our large guild.  While this is NOT a meeting (do not feel like you are missing anything official if you do not attend) we will be doing a few meeting type things as we feel out this new format. As this is a test run, it will not be available for non-members at this time.

QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt Challenge
The QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge is back and with a lovely new name! This year's theme is curves and has a lovely bright palette of oranges and blues. We are looking for a small team of individuals who can take on the organization of this challenge on behalf of the guild.
